It is told that, in ancient times, the rim-less pots which were jet black with soot, were picked by the monks from the rubbish heaps. UKT 161207:
Every Bur-Myan speaker, whether he be Buddhist, Christian, or
Muslim knows at least some words relating to Astrology. It was more so when
I was young, and when every Buddhist monk (including nuns) and almost every
Buddhist male know elements of Burmese Astrology. Even though I have almost
no faith in Astrology, especially the "correctional aspect" where one tries
to avert the oncoming evil, I have studied Astrology - the Hindu Nakshatra
kind - to a professional level. I have studied the indigenous Bur-Myan
astrology, the Mahaboat to some extent. The word
{OAc}
is quite familiar to me.
No wonder the ancient Indian and Chinese warriors were afraid the cross the northern mountains to wage war in the heartland of Myanmarpré because of curses and spells which the indigenous ethnics are able to inflict on the foreigners.
It is not well-known that the British governor, William Pitt Amherst, First Earl Amherst (1773-1857) who started the First Anglo-Burmese War (1824-26) during his governorship (1823-1828), had to pay dearly for his unjust war (replacement in 1828). He was accused of the British government for nearly bankrupting the British-India treasury. He was only saved by the fame of great-uncle, Jeffery Baron Amherst 1717-1797 - who allegedly earned his baronet by distributing smallpox infected blanks to indigenous peoples of North America to subjugate them.
A town in Tenasserim, in southern
Myanmarpré was renamed Amherst, and a native flower was named after Lady
Amherst. But unknown to the British the name of the flower in Burmese almost
means "distress" - Thawka "Queen of the flowering plant" Amherstia nobilis
(Caesalpiniaceae). See Botanical Names of Myanmar Plants
