Note the similarities in the shapes of graphemes {ba.} ब and {wa.} व in Devanagari. The difference is just a diagonal line in the inside of the "circle" which probably indicates that Skt-Dev speakers pronounce the two sounds quite similarly. -- UKT100920

¤ The problem of approximants with nasal {ni.} . Since there is no repha in Burmese, the first entry should be  {naiy~ya.} निय्य . However, because U Hoke Sein has given {ni.yya-þa.}; U Pe Maung Tin niyyāsa , and OnlineSktDict निर्यासः (niryaasaH) for what I believe to be the same word which can be translated as 'gum - a plant product', the word could be given as either {naiy~ya.} or {ni.yya.} in Romabama. However, because of my very limited knowledge of Pali-Myanmar, and of course, Sanskrit-Devanagari, I am unable to advise Burmese-speakers what the pronunciation ought to be. Clearly, I have landed myself in hot soup! - UKT100921

Buddhist Nirvana and the After-Death State

UKT 100923: As a Buddhist and a scientist, I have been asked by many in the West - Canada and US, privately and in public lectures - to explain the meaning of {naib~ba-na.} or the Bur-Myan {naib~baan} (See MED238). I realize that I cannot equate it to the Christian Heaven ruled by God. The definition I usually give is the second meaning given by U Hoke Sein: "Freedom of Attachment" which to me is the Second Noble Truth of Buddhism. I have been asked "attachment from what" to which I give the explanation: "attachment from ideas - elaborating that they are ideas which cannot be proven scientifically". As a scientist I give my personal opinion that the very idea of the existence of a creator or God, and the very idea of a permanent soul that transcends physical death are the examples. I have to add that my personal opinions also belong to the category of unproven ideas!

As to the question of After-Death State, my answer is: "Because a person who has realized {naib~baan}, is free from attachment of all including "ideas", he doesn't care if there is either an After-Death State or not. The After-Death State is just an "idea" and the very question is moot.
