{ré:hkya.}
problem
There are two forms of diacritic used for the long vowels: the
{mauk-hkya.} and the
{weik-hkya.}. Taken together the two are are known as {ré:hkya.}. Since, the Myanmar akshara is based on circles,
either single or double, there ought be a "rule"
to write the single circle with the
{mauk-hkya.}, and the double or its modification with the
{weik-hkya.}. However, at the present, under the approval of
the Myanmar Language Commission (MLC), we do not have a logical
rule like that instead of which we have an arbitrary system as
shown in the diagram on the right. (Entries in red are mine.)
I do remember that at one time, in my school days, that there
was such a rule, at least in my school. Thus, I remember we
used to write {Da} as
and not as today
the latter being easily mistaken for
{ta.}.
