Taking UMK-USL explanation and modern chemistry together, I am inclined to compare gandhu-dhatu with "pheromeone". (pheromone n. 1. A chemical secreted by an animal, especially an insect, that influences the behavior or development of others of the same species. [Greek pherein to carry; See bher- 1 in Indo-European Roots. (hor)mone ] pheromonal adj. -- AHTD ) From this comparison, the interpretation can be extended to mean any chemical that can be detected by smell.PTS p244

2. condition, ground, cause, means, esp. a cause of desire or clinging to life, pl. ārammaṇā causes of rebirth
3. a basis for the working of the mind and intellect; sense-object, object of thought or consciousness, the outward constituent in the relation of subject and object, object in general. In this meaning of "relation" it is closely with āyatana, so that it sometimes takes its place. It is also similar to visaya .
