ketu-- [Vedic ketu ]
1. ray, beam of light, splendour, effulgence (or a brilliant radiance); which is a riddle on the various meanings of ketu .
2. flag, banner, sign (perhaps as token of splendour.dhamma ketu
-- having the Doctrine as his banner.
ketu-kamyatā -- desire for prominence, self-advertisement (perhaps vainglory, arrogance)
ketu-mālā
-- "garland" of rays.
UKT: The word "ketu" in Hindu astrology means a "dark planet" which can cast a "shadow" on a person. It is one of the two "dark" planets: Rahu
and Ketu
. Both are "imaginary planets" and their positions are derived at mathematically. Notice that implied meanings of the word "ketu" in Buddhism and Hindu astrology are exactly opposite. However, in Myanmar astrology, Ketu is the "king" of the planets. The only way in which I can reconcile the opposing views is thus:
Both Rahu and Ketu hide something behind them.
Rahu hides by cutting off the line of sight with a blanket or a curtain, whereas Ketu hides by shining a blinding light. Thus, when a person comes under the influence of Rahu, the person is cut off from the good earthly forces acting on him, so his earthly-self suffers. However, when a person comes under the influence of Ketu, the earthly forces are set aside by Dhamma forces, thereby making the person lose sight of his worldly affairs and his earthly-self suffers. Since, astrology concerns a person's worldly affairs, both Rahu and Ketu are harmful planets.
