n. responsive nature of the body to stimulation of the senses

dhātu -- element (closely related to dhamma in meaning, only implying a closer relation to physical substance.)
1. a primary element of which the usual set comprises the four, paṭhavi (earth), āpo (water), tejo (fire), vāyo (wind), otherwise termed cattāro mahā-bhūta .

2. a natural condition, property, disposition; factor, item, principle. In this meaning closely related to khanda. More in PTS p340.
