ka-ra-tha

karīsa

{ka.ri-tha.}

PTS p196.
ka-rī-sa --
1. (nt.) a square measure of land (being that space on which a karīsa of seed can be sown)
2. refuse, filth, excrement, dung
  ka-rī-sa mag-ga -- anus
  ka-rī-sa vā-sa -- cesspool

UKT: Looking at the two meanings of karītha, makes me wonder whether the two are related because in areas of residences where pit latrines could not be dug (as was the case of my birth place in Myanmar), "night-soil" or human excreta was collected overnight in vessels to be carried out and emptied in the morning. In Myanmar the word for such vessels, usually made of wood, is {mein-la za.la:} where {za.la:} refers to the vessel.
