UKT: Does the word means "a journey" or "a deserted land" through which it is difficult to travel? UMK-USL p23 gives the meaning as "journey". PTS p186 gives the meaning as "wilds".
n. difficult journey through a wilderness. There are 5 kinds of such journeys:

-- journey through a wilderness infested by thieves and robbers
2. vāla kantāra -- journey through a wilderness infested by beasts of prey
3. nirudaka kantāra -- journey through a waterless land
4. amanussa kantāra -- journey through a wilderness by ogres
5. dubbhikkha kantāra (also as appabbhakkha kantāra) -- journey through a land where there is nothing to eat.
