From Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B%E1%B9%9Bhaspati 120429
UKT: Wikipedia looks at the god first and the planet as second, whereas because I am a Buddhist I will downplay the Hindu god, and look at the planet first.
In Jyotisha (Hindu astrology), Bṛhaspati is the name for the planet Jupiter, which is one of the Navagraha (the nine planets) . It is also known as Guru, Cura and Devaguru. Bṛhaspati is considered to be the greatest benefic of any of the planets. [UKT ¶]
UKT: After working on about a hundred horoscopes, using the Ashtakavarga method, I no longer view Guru as a 'benefic' at all occasions on all persons. Let's look at a common experience: if the person involved is a criminal, the police cannot be his protector or a benefic to him. Also let's look on the timing. If you are a good person and though you generally take the police as beneficial to you, sometimes the conduct of police can be annoying, when, say they have to cordon off your area of residence to search the premise of your next-door neighbour.
To those who consider me to be a material scientist -- a skeptical chemist and a down-to earth engineer -- I must say this. I view astrology -- not the crystal kind -- as a record of human achievements, follies, fears and hopes.
Our lives move in cycles: some are well defined and some are not. The first cycle is the cycle of day and night. The cycle of day and night means differently to different persons: thus to a Myanmar who lives in the tropics the cycle repeats itself in 24 hours which is not so to an Inuit of Canada. To Inuit the cycle repeats in a year. Unknown to those living along the coast of Mediterranean, are the very regular tides which depend on the phases of the Moon. For me who was born and who had spent the early years of childhood in Kungyangon in the Irrawaddy Delta, the connection between the tides and the Moon has a lasting impression in life. The saying 'history repeats itself' is a testimony to the idea of cycle of events.
Like the phases of the Moon, the movements of the planets are nothing but clocks. Astrology keeps a record of events by the movements of planets. Whether there are devas or gods residing in planets have nothing to do with these clocks. -- UKT120428
Guru rules over the signs Dhanu (Sagittarius) and Meena (Pisces), he is exalted in Karka (Cancer) and in his fall in Makara (Capricorn). The Sun, Moon and Mars are considered friendly to Bṛhaspati, Mercury is hostile and Saturn is neutral.
UKT: the above statement "Mercury is hostile" doesn't agree with Greek mythology. In Greek mythology, the manly god Jupiter and the hermaphrodite god Mercury are companions. The goddess Venus [in Burmese-astrology, Venus is male - a god]. and Jupiter are opposites.
Guru in Vedic astrology is considered to be of the element ether (space) or Akasha Tattva (i.e. Akasha = Space/Sky/Aether; Tattva = Essence/Category/Truth). This indicates vastness, growth and expansion in a person's horoscope and life. Bṛhaspati also represents the balance of past karma, religion, philosophy, knowledge and issues relating to offspring. He is concerned with education, teaching and the dispensation of knowledge. Humans with Jupiter dominating in their horoscope could grow fat as life progresses and their empire and prosperity increases; and diabetes is an ailment directly related to Jupiter. According to traditional Hindu astrology, worship or propitiation of Bṛhaspati or Guru (Jupiter) results in cure from ailments affecting the stomach and helps ward off sins.
Bṛhaspati is lord of three Nakshatras or lunar mansions: Punarvasu, Vishakha and Purva Bhadrapada. The following items are associated with Bṛhaspati: his color is yellow, metal is gold and gemstone is yellow topaz and yellow sapphire. The season associated with him is winter (snow), direction is north-east and element is ether or space.
Bṛhaspati (Skt: बृहस्पति, Tamil: பிருகஸ்பதி, "lord of prayer or devotion",[1] often written as Brihaspati or Bruhaspati) also known as Brahmanaspati and Deva-guru (guru of the gods), is the name of a Vedic deity. He is considered the personification of piety and religion, and the chief 'offerer of prayers and sacrifices to the gods' (Skt: Purohita), with whom he intercedes on behalf of humankind. (This figure is distinct from the founder of Carvaka/Lokayata philosophy, who is also called Brihaspati, c. 600 b.c.e., and is described in Wikipedia's Cārvāka page.)
In later Hindu Theology, he is the guru of the Devas and the arch-nemesis of Shukracharya [UKT: the planet Venus], the guru of the Danavas. [UKT: Danava like Asura are demonized in later Hindu theology. To the Myanmar-Buddhist, they are all the same.] He is also known as Ganapati (leader of the group [of planets]), and Guru (teacher), the god of wisdom and eloquence, to whom various works are ascribed, such as the Barhaspatya sutras.
He is described of yellow or golden colour and holding the following divine attributes: a stick, a lotus and beads. He presides over 'Guru-var' or Thursday.[2]
In astronomy he is the regent of Jupiter and often identified with that planet.
Unlike a regular Sanskrit compound, his name receives two accents in Vedic Sanskrit, bṛ́has-páti "lord of prayer", like bráhmanas páti "lord of prayer".
