From Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Makar_Sankranti 110428
Makar Sankranti (Skt: मकर संक्रान्ति) or Sankranti or Sankranthi marks the transition of the Sun into Makara rashi (Capricorn) on its celestial path. Traditionally, this has been one of many harvest days in India.
Kite fighting in Myanmar: End of the rainy season in Myanmar heralds clear skies and sunny days. The rice harvest soon begins bringing in cool weather and gentle breezes: the time to fly kites. The kites shown in the inset pix are of the same shape and construction as those made in Myanmar. A short tail is perfect for maneuvering the kite making it ideal for fighting. Fighting involves cutting off the opponent's kite-string. The kite-strings are made sharp by dipping a whole spool of sewing-machine cotton thread in a mixture of fine glass-splinters and glue, and drying. They are razor-sharp which can cut your skin deeply. Kite strings are a menace to telephone lines and kite fighting is forbidden in some areas. -- UKT110428
Owing to the vast geography and diversity of culture in India, this festival is celebrated for innumerable reasons and in innumerable ways depending on the climate, agricultural environment, cultural background and location.
