Plant identification characters
• A shrub; younger stems cylindrical, glabrous. Leaves alternate, simple; exstipulate; petioles short, stout; laminae elliptic or obovate-elliptic, the bases cuneate or obtuse, the margins entire, the tips shortly acuminate, unicostate, reticulate, the surfaces glabrous, coriaceous. Inflorescences in axillary corymbose cymes; bracts deciduoud. Flowers ebracteolate, pedicellate, bisexual, actinomorphic, pentamerous, hypogynous. Calyx synsepalous, 5-sect, campanulate, the lobes elliptic, petaloid, pinkish, persistent and accrescent and closely pressed to fruit. Corolla synpetalous, 5-partite, twisted to the right in bud, the tubes short, the lobes acute, pink. Androecium polyandrous, stamens 5, epipetalous, opposite the corolla lobes, the filaments very short, inserted, the anthers dithecous, ovoid-lanceolate, basifixed, introrse, dehiscence longitudinal. Pistil 1, ovary ovoid, 5-carpelled, syncarpous, 1-loculed, placentation free central, the ovules 10 in the locule, the style 1, stout, the stigma simple. Fruit a drupe, globose with peristent style, obscurely depressed, exocarp fleshy, endocarp stony, bright scarlet; seed 1, globose, endosperm copious. Flowering period: August-September. Fruiting period: October-January. -- KS-TMN
