Plant identification characters :
• A shrub with spiny branches, opposite, lanceolate, entire, glabrous, leaves fragrant, rose-coloured flowers arranged in terminal panicles of cymes and capsular fruits. -- UHM
• Under shrub or shrub, fast growing, up to 20 feet tall (6 m); opposite,
elliptic to elliptic lanceolate leaves 0.5 to 2 inches long (1.2-5 cm), 0.4 to
1.2 inches wide (1-3 cm). L. inermis has numerous, very fragrant, white,
pink or red flowers, in terminal panicles, in summer. Undehiscent fruit. --
Distribution in Myanmar:
• Very commonly grown in gardens. -- UHM
Part used and uses :
• The dried leaves. Used as Chiefly as a colouring agent for the hair, skin and nails. Astringent and a decoction of the same is employed in cases of inflammation and burns and also used in enlargement of spleens and in jaundice. -- UHM
Constituents :
• 1. An oxynapthoquinone compound called lawsone C10H6O3, which occurs in orange crystals. 2. Henna-tannic acid. 3. Mucilage. 4. Fat. 5. resin, mannite, etc. (7) -- UHM
