Dictionaries used

• AHTD - American Heritage Talking Dictionary CD. All computer users are advised to have this dictionary installed on the hard disc for all time use. If you want to check on the pronunciation of a word - in GA or General American pronunciation - you will have to insert the CD itself. Note that GA is the most common English accent you will hear on international radio and TV.

• DJPD16 - Daniel Jones English Pronouncing Dictionary 16ed., 2003. The pronunciations are given in IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) which can be very easily related to the Myanmar akshara.

A Letter

Mg grandson Po Kan
and his friends Anthony and Tatina

Po Kan was born in Scotland, Anthony and his sister were born in California. And, if and when they would like to to go back to their roots - to Burma, I hope this little book would be their guide, for by that time, I may not be around anymore. Yet, they must remember that my spirit and those of my ancestors will always be there to welcome them.

Deep River, January 1991

About version 01

-- UKT 121112

Version01 with C60 tapes were marketed soon after completion. However, after some years, with my progress in Phonetics, Linguistics, and teaching of a second language, I felt the need to write a new version, and Ver01 was pulled off the market. However, due to other pressing matters, I could not finished the new version.

In the meantime, my wife passed away in 2004. The original manuscript and the C60 tapes had been put away by my wife, and when I tried to locate them in 2008, I could recover only some pages of the manuscript. With these I started Ver02 in 2008 -- the tapes were still missing somewhere in my home in Canada in which I do not want to live anymore -- too many memories of my wife.

I went back to Myanmar to do my research on linguistics. Now after coming back to Canada in 2011, I searched for the tapes again but it was still very painful to look into my wife's belongings. I searched off and on, and only after about a year, I remembered that she might have put the tapes away together with French in Action tapes.

Yes, they were there and our son ZinTun undertook to change the audio format to mp3. To my horror, I found that the new version, B4FF2-indx.htm (link lost), which I had started while the tapes were still missing, and Ver01 differ on many points. I am now in the process of trying to restore Ver01 and listen to my dear wife's voice of 20 years ago. The restored version has many notes written based on my new knowledge and many sound clips of voices of my staff in Yangon. I am sending all the tapes -- for six chapters -- back to Yangon by posting here. Wutyi my adopted granddaughter - now my CEO in Yangon - would download them and split the chapters down to sections and send them back to me by email.
